Bamboo – The new wonder in sustainability

Bamboo is the new wonder as a sustainable alternative to plastic. At Groomi you will find it among others in our toothbrushes, dishbrush and our Tencel Lyocell Bamboo socks
Products made from bamboo are becoming more and more popular, but why? In this article, we will look into why bamboo is so amazing, what it can be used for and how it is so sustainable.

Amazingly fast growing

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth, and is extremely useful for many different purposes. Among other things, you see that bamboo replaces disposable plastic, which is really good for the environment. For example, bamboo toothbrushes are becoming more popular.

The sustainable alternative to plastic

Back in December 2018, the EU countries made an agreement that disposable plastic should be phased out during 2021, and here bamboo seems to be the sustainable alternative, especially if you look at personal care products such as toothbrushes and cotton swabs.

Here, Swedish The Humble Co. has really taken the lead, and has developed the world’s best-selling bamboo toothbrush, The Humble Brush.

In addition to their bamboo toothbrush, The Humble Co. has also developed cotton swabs and interdental brushes made of bamboo. All three bamboo products help to reduce the consumption of disposable plastic, and therefore help to improve the environment.

If we look at another company in Scandinavia, namely the Danish company Maistic, we also see a company on a mission to reduce consumption of disposable plastic.

Among other things, Maistic has developed straws made of bamboo, as a replacement for straws made of disposable plastic.

More sustainable than other plants

But why exactly bamboo, you might be thinking. The reason why the choice has fallen on bamboo in particular is that bamboo is incredibly sustainable.

As mentioned earlier, bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth. Some bamboo species can grow up to 91 cm a day. In addition, bamboo reaches full maturity within 3-5 years, and is therefore ready much faster than if you used wood.

In addition to growing incredibly fast, bamboo is also important in the fight against CO2.

Bamboo releases up to 30% more oxygen into the atmosphere and absorbs more CO2, compared to other plants. Because of this, bamboo greatly reduces the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and purifies the air.
