FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, and is a term for forests that have received an international certification in that the forest is responsibly managed and the products are sustainable and environmentally friendly. It thus ensures that logging practices are ecologically sound and socially beneficial and are designed to ensure legal and sustainable forest management.
Forests are an important part of the ecosystem. They give us fresh air and water, pull down CO2 and protect our country from erosion. But forests are in danger of disappearing – an area the size of 10 football pitches is being lost every minute due to deforestation, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
In response to this threat, companies and governments have begun to devote significant time and resources to forest conservation around the world. One such initiative is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.
The Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit organization that promotes responsible forestry practices. It was established in 1993 and its mission is to “promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests”. FSC offers two certifications: FSC-COC-00100 for natural forest management taking into account biodiversity conservation and FSC-COC-00200 sustainable forest management taking into account social justice. The latter certification is targeted at smallholder farmers in developing countries.
The logo of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a tree with a blue sky behind it. The blue sky symbolizes the company’s commitment to ensuring that its products are made from wood that comes from responsibly managed forests, while the wood represents the forests themselves and their importance to humans and wildlife.
Use of FSC certified materials in TENCEL products
TENCEL ™ Lyocell is a type of fiber made from wood pulp cellulose which is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It has a soft touch and has an incredible recovery speed – which means it jumps back into shape when stretched or pulled. Tencel ™ Lyocell is also environmentally friendly as it does not require pesticides or chemical treatments. Tencel is perfect for use in clothing including underwear and at Groomi it is the carrying material in both our boxer shorts and socks.
You can read more about how the process goes from going from sustainable FSC certified forest products to TENCEL certified products here. In addition, we have written a specific article about TENCEL ™ Lyocell which you can find here.
